Remembering Prof. Michael Sela

Renowned Immunologist and Beloved Leader of the Weizmann Institute of Science

The worldwide community of the Weizmann Institute of Science deeply mourns the passing of our beloved longtime leader, preeminent scientist, and dear friend, Prof. Michael Sela.

Throughout his illustrious career, Michael made numerous discoveries that forever changed immunological research, shedding light on the genetic control of the immune response.

He co-invented the blockbuster drug Copaxone® for the treatment of multiple sclerosis as well as three cancer treatment drugs – Erbitux®, Vectibix®, and Portrazza® – which have improved the lives of millions worldwide.

As a leading figure in Israeli and international science, Michael created and developed new fields of research, subsequently paving the way for countless other scientists to change the world.

Michael served as the president of the Weizmann Institute of Science from 1975-1985. He was a leader and a mentor for multiple generations of students and scientists on campus and remained an active and prolific scientist at the Institute for more than 70 years. His career epitomized Weizmann’s dedication to science for the benefit of humanity.

An Israel Prize laureate at the age of 35 for his life science research, Michael received numerous international prizes and honors throughout his career and was awarded honorary doctorates from the most prestigious research organizations worldwide.

As a true leader, Michael deepened the partnership between the Weizmann Institute and the American Committee, giving generously of his time and counsel. We are grateful for his unfailing commitment to further the mission and build on our mutual success.

Prof. Michael Sela will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him, and his legacy will live on for generations to come. We will continue to be inspired by his passion, brilliance, insatiable curiosity, visionary leadership, and warm heart.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Sara, daughters Irit, Orlee, and Tamar, and to the entire family.
