Aug 31, 2017... American ISSI participants, summer 2017
If you’re like me, you may have relaxed at the beach or by the pool this summer. Jacob Chandran, a 2017 graduate of River Hill High School, had more ambitious plans. He recently returned from Israel, where he spent four weeks conducting advanced scientific research at the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Chandran was one of 19 teens from the United States selected to participate in the annual Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI). He received a full scholarship to this prestigious program, which accepts only one in five applicants. The program gives students the opportunity to conduct research with world-renowned scientists in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science.

2017: A Year of Life-Changing Science

https://weizmann-usa.org/news-media/feature-stories/2017-a-year-of-life-changing-science/

Dec 19, 2017... We are always rushing around, in a hurry to get to the next goal or errand. Forward momentum is natural, but the end of one year and the start of another is the perfect time to pause and reflect. When it comes to the Weizmann Institute of Science, this is always an uplifting and rewarding exercise, and 2017 was particularly awe-inspiring. Let’s look at some of the highlights.
Cancer immunotherapy. In the 1980s, Prof. Zelig Eshhar began to develop what he called “CAR T cells,” genetically modified immune cells that harness the patient’s own immune system to fight disease. American researchers built on his discoveries, and the therapy led to astonishing remission in leukemia patients. In August, CAR T-cells made history as the first gene therapy approved by the FDA; since then, a second has been approved. Prof. Eshhar is now studying CAR T-cells for treating other diseases.

Sep 01, 2016... Pueblo West High School valedictorian Eric Sun – now starting his freshman year at Harvard – got a head start on learning this summer as one of 20 teens hand-plucked from the U.S. for a month-long scientific research experience in Rehovot, Israel.
Sun said the opportunity and all he gained from it was amazing and eye opening.
“Getting a month of research experience in a field that I was not very familiar with was definitely a great way to expand my horizons,” he said. “The program was a great gateway into feeling out what a college or scientific experience may be like.”
