NEW YORK, NY—July 18, 2016—The Telly Awards, one of the world’s premier honors recognizing outstanding films and videos, has named the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science as the winner of a Bronze award in the 37th Annual Telly Awards in 2016.
A Bronze Telly was awarded in the category of Online Video, Fund Raising, for the film “Project-Based Fundraising.” The video introduces the American Committee’s online fundraising initiative, which encourages donors to create peer-to-peer fundraising pages to support research projects that match their personal passions and interests.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett announced Wednesday that Professor Adi Kimchi of the Weizmann Institute of Science is this year’s winner of the Israel Prize for research in life sciences.
Kimchi heads a lab that studies the complex processes of programmed death in living cells.
The prize selection committee noted Kimchi’s pioneering work in isolating genes involved in cells’ self-destruction, a process that, among other things, helps the body suppress cancer development.

As the first female chemistry professor at both the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, which have a combined history in chemistry of about 800 years, I am often asked to comment on the poor retention of women chemists by UK universities. The decline from chemistry PhDs (46% women) to professorships (just 6%) is steeper than in other disciplines, including physics and engineering1. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. Here I offer personal reflections from my career in chemistry about why women leave science.

Reprogramming cells to cure diseases
Mere months after Kyoto University researchers announced in 2007 that they had discovered how to turn skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), Jacob Hanna used these new types of cells to cure mice of sickle-cell anemia, in which a genetic defect causes bone marrow to make defective red blood cells. Hanna, a fellow at the Whitehead Institute, took skin cells from a diseased mouse and reprogrammed them create iPS cells, which behave like embryonic stem cells, readily turning into any cell type in the body. He then corrected the sickle-cell genetic defect and prodded the iPS cells to develop into the type of marrow stem cell that manufactures a mouse’s blood cells. These healthy cells were transplanted back into the mouse, whose immune system accepted them as the animal's own tissue. The treated mouse began producing healthy red blood cells on its own.

Touchdown: Rossetta mission crew celebrate
The first ever landing of a man-made probe onto a comet has been named Physics World Breakthrough of the Year for 2014.
From a shortlist of 10 highly commended breakthroughs, the historic achievement by scientists working on the Rosetta mission was singled out by the Physics World editorial team for its significance and fundamental importance to space science.
