The recent motion by the U.K.’s largest university union (NAFTHE) recommending a boycott of all Israeli academics who “do not publicly dissociate themselves” from Israeli policies has reignited the debate around this issue (“Over protests, U.K. union endorses boycott of Israeli academics,” E. Marshall, News of the Week, 2 June, p. 1289).
Despite the fact that the NAFTHE decision is only “advisory,” it is likely that many will view it as an inducement to act along the lines of the motion. As an Israeli academic, I find myself wondering just which Israeli policies these anonymous potential boycotters would like me to publicly dissociate myself from? Should I dissociate myself from the policy to encourage joint Palestinian-Israeli science projects, the policy to admit students and faculty to our universities regardless of their race or religion, or the policy to continue withdrawals from occupied territory if the Palestinians will only stop using such territory as launching pads for further attacks on us? Or perhaps the boycotters would like me to dissociate myself from the security barrier that has markedly reduced the number of deaths of Israeli civilians from homicide bombers? If the latter, unfortunately, it seems the boycotters would like to see us choose between death and damnation.

The students in Allison Granberry’s class at Hostos-Lincoln Academy, a South Bronx public school serving children in grades 6 to 12, are as excited about proteins and other biological macromolecules as most kids their age are about playing basketball or updating their Facebook status.
The passion of these newly minted scientists is due to the enthusiasm of Ms. Granberry, as well as Prof. Joel L. Sussman of the Department of Structural Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. In a Rockefeller University after–school outreach program called SMART (Students Modeling A Research Topic) Team—a nationwide project conceived by Dr. Timothy Herman, Director of the Center for Biomolecular Modeling at the Milwaukee School of Engineering—Ms. Granberry and her students work with Prof. Sussman’s website Proteopedia (proteopedia.org).

American ISSI participants, summer 2017
If you’re like me, you may have relaxed at the beach or by the pool this summer. Jacob Chandran, a 2017 graduate of River Hill High School, had more ambitious plans. He recently returned from Israel, where he spent four weeks conducting advanced scientific research at the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Chandran was one of 19 teens from the United States selected to participate in the annual Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI). He received a full scholarship to this prestigious program, which accepts only one in five applicants. The program gives students the opportunity to conduct research with world-renowned scientists in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science.

REHOVOT, ISRAEL—July 18, 2007—The Weizmann Institute of Science has instituted a new program aimed at assisting highly talented young women to work toward a career in the natural or exact sciences. The goal of the program is to begin closing the gap between male and female scientists in the highest ranks of academia.
The numbers of women and men completing graduate degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.) in the sciences are close to even. But in Israel, as in the rest of the world, relatively few women end up on the track to academic advancement, and their representation on the higher levels of academic faculties is abysmally low.

To curb the Israeli academic “brain drain” and increase cooperation between the U.S. and Israeli scientific communities, newspaper publisher, businessman and philanthropist Mortimer Zuckerman has committed more than $100 million to attract postdoctoral researchers from Western countries to Israeli universities and lure Israeli academics back.

Apr 15, 2015... At long last, spring – and with it comes thoughts of renewal, change, and the future. In a harbinger of great things to come, six extraordinary PhD students from the Weizmann Institute’s Feinberg Graduate School came to the U.S. Visiting American Committee regions and addressing supporters in New York City, South Florida, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area, these envoys shared their love of science, explained why they chose Weizmann, and described their impressive research, which is highlighted below. This may be the first time you’ve heard of them… but it won’t be the last.

Pueblo West High School valedictorian Eric Sun – now starting his freshman year at Harvard – got a head start on learning this summer as one of 20 teens hand-plucked from the U.S. for a month-long scientific research experience in Rehovot, Israel.
Sun said the opportunity and all he gained from it was amazing and eye opening.
“Getting a month of research experience in a field that I was not very familiar with was definitely a great way to expand my horizons,” he said. “The program was a great gateway into feeling out what a college or scientific experience may be like.”

Dr. Ami Shalit admits that his job has its unconventional aspects. As the director and academic secretary of the Feinberg Graduate School, Dr. Shalit explains that a critical aspect of his role at the academic arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) is “to swim in the students’ veins, understanding what their needs are.”
It is an extraordinary job description for any administrator, and Dr. Shalit’s degree of involvement with the Feinberg Graduate School’s students is all the more remarkable considering the depth and variety of students. In an effort to fulfill its mission of educating future scientific leaders, the school grants all of its nearly one thousand master’s and Ph.D. students full tuition remission and stipends. This policy allows the graduate students to focus their complete attention on the scientific achievements for which the Weizmann Institute is known.
