Dec 17, 2018... (l-r) Profs. Ilan Koren, Yoav Schechner, and Klaus Schilling are inventing a new way of imaging clouds
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—December 17, 2018—Ten satellites, each around the size of a shoebox, are slated in a few years to enter orbit and begin filling in some gaping holes in our understanding of clouds and their role in climate. Inspired by medical CT (computed tomography), which observes and maps patients’ interiors, the designers are creating a system that will reveal detailed images of clouds’ external and internal 3D structures and properties. By probing small cloud fields that are generally missed by today’s remote-sensing technologies, the mission may resolve some major uncertainties that limit current atmospheric modelling and climate prediction.

Though they work in different fields, four South Florida women recently honored as Women of Vision by the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science have one thing in common — they're making a big difference in the community.
"We seek out honorees who have really given back or helped the community, either with philanthropic ways or through the time and effort they've put into other charities or organizations that benefit others," said Richard Enslein, executive director of the institute's South Florida region.

Apr 12, 2019... On April 2, Patricia Gruber presented the 13th annual Gruber Award for Scientific Excellence to the Weizmann Institute’s Dr. Sivan Refaely-Abramson. Established by Patricia and her late husband, Peter, through their Gruber Foundation, the three-year award recognizes brilliant early-career Weizmann scientists.
New Weizmann faculty members require significant support to establish their labs and launch their careers. By empowering these “bright lights,” as Patricia calls them, the Grubers understood that they were making a worthy investment in the future of science.

Jan 02, 2013... Two years ago, at a press conference that drew wide attention, scientists described a newfound microbe in California’s Mono Lake that flouted life’s basic instruction manual. They claimed that the bacterium, GFAJ-1, survived not on phosphate (essential to all known organisms) but on arsenate, a toxic arsenic compound. NASA hailed the work as a step forward in the search for alien life. But now other researchers have discredited the discovery.
