Dr. Ori Avinoam of Weizmann’s Department of Biomolecular Sciences presents an overview of his lab’s coronavirus research. His team has created a pseudovirus, which has all the elements of the coronavirus but is not infectious. Coronaviruses go through several steps as they infect a cell, and Dr. Avinoam using the pseudovirus to find ways of blocking those steps – and, thus, stopping the virus. The pseudo version emits light, and when, after an experiment, there is no light, Dr. Avinoam and his team know that they have successfully blocked a step.
