Israeli government investment arm the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) has approved the establishment of the CRISPR-IL consortium, which will focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and CRISPR technologies to develop advanced computational tools for genome editing, IIA announced Wednesday.
The consortium will be allocated with a total of NIS 36 million (approximately $10.36 million) for a period of 18 months, with an option to extend operations for an additional 18 months.

Many bacteria contain retrons, DNA sequences which code for enzymes that transcribe RNA into DNA and an unusual molecule made of both DNA and RNA. But microbiologists have puzzled over retrons’ function. “People suggested . . . this may be a selfish genetic element, [or] it may be involved in virulence,” says the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Rotem Sorek. “But nobody actually knew.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But at the Weizmann Institute, the focus on defeating this pervasive cancer is front and center every day, all year long.
Now, in exciting news, researchers at Weizmann, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. and other institutions, have revealed a mechanism that accounts for the spread of a particularly aggressive type of breast malignancy. Cancers that spread rapidly are generally harder to treat, but clarifying the molecular basis of such aggressive cancers may lead to new drugs for treating these fast-growing malignancies.
